Rapids Weekly Team Update

COMMERCE CITY CO (10/16/07) - After becoming the first team to defeat Chivas USA at home this year the Colorado Rapids return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park to face their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals Real Salt Lake with the playoffs on the line this Saturday night at 7:00pm.

In their last match the Rapids were reduced to ten men just after half-hour mark but Ugo Ihemelu scored his first MLS goal to give the Rapids the lead in the 64th minute and Omar Cummings took a pass from Conor Casey in the final minute of regulation and tapped in the game-winning goal to send the Rapids home with 3 points.

This weekend the Rapids look to win their third straight game and qualify for the MLS Playoffs for the tenth time in the team’s 12-year history. With a win or draw the Rapids can also win the Rocky Mountain Cup competition for the third straight year.

Head Coach Fernando Clavijo on the road win over Chivas USA:
"It was a great win. We were able to accomplish it because of our attitude and believing in what we are capable of doing. We even did it down a man something we have mastered this season either through practice or determination. The team decided that there were still a lot of things to fight for and they were not going to quit. I’m extremely proud of the boys the way we fought throughout the game and managed to get that goal at the end."
Clavijo on this coming Saturday’s game vs. Real Salt Lake:
"We have put ourselves in a position where we must get three points and watch the other results in the league. We may have to try to score more goals depending on what happens. We will be extra motivated but so will Salt Lake. I know the game will be a battle. It will be physical it will be emotional but we expect to come out with the three points to stay in contention for the playoffs."
Playoff Scenarios: The Colorado Rapids are one of four teams fighting for the final two playoff spots. Currently the Kansas City Wizards and Chicago Fire hold those spots with the Rapids and Los Angeles Galaxy on the outside looking in. The Rapids have to win on Saturday and get help from all three of the other teams in order to reach the playoffs.
Rapids Reserves Champions Again: For the second straight year the Colorado Rapids Reserves are the MLS Reserve Division Champions. With a record of 7-0-3 the Rapids Reserves captured the crown with two games still to play. On Sunday night Oct. 7 the team defeated the Toronto FC Reserves 3-0 behind goals from Jordan Harvey Jose Cancela and Nico Colaluca. The Rapids Reserves will next take on the Salt Lake Reserves at 9:00am this Sunday morning on the Rapids' training field.
Perfect Timing: Rapids defender Ugo Ihemelu picked a great game to score his first career goal. In the 64th minute of his 77th game the Nigerian-born player one-timed a deflected shot past a helpless Brad Guzan after picking himself off the ground. The play started with Ihemelu flicking a Jose Cancela free kick to Conor Casey on the back post.
