Rapids Weekly Team Update

COMMERCE CITY CO (9/18/07) - Fresh off their come-from-behind draw vs. Chivas USA on Sunday your Rapids are set to have five training sessions this week before traveling to take on Real Salt Lake this Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

In their last match your Rapids didn't let two lightning delays slow them down as Colin Clark scored his second goal of the year to pull one back against Chivas and give the Rapids a vital point in the standings in the race towards the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Your Rapids will look to take home the Rocky Mountain Cup for the third straight year which they can secure with a win against Real on Saturday. A win and three points in the standings could also possibly push Colorado into playoff position.

Pablo Mastroeni and Mike Petke both attempted to play through flu-like symptoms on Sunday receiving fluids through an IV before the game. Unfortunately Petke lasted only the first 23 minutes but Mastroeni played the entire 90 minutes after receiving two more IVs during halftime and the second lightning delay. Both are still recovering from a particularly nasty strain of illness.

Conor Casey slightly sprained the MCL in his right knee during the draw with Chivas USA and is listed as questionable for Saturday's Rocky Mountain Cup match in Salt Lake.

Forward Herculez Gomez is out for the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and lateral meniscus in his right knee in practice on September 12. Gomez will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair the damage and is expected to be out 6-9 months.

Head Coach Fernando Clavijo on the Rapids' come from behind effort on Sunday:
"I think the effort was spectacular by everybody. Our start was the best of the year in the first ten minutes we were all over them. We hit the crossbar had a corner kick and forced a great save from Guzan. Then the momentum was taken away from us by the penalty and red card. We then struggled as Chivas didn’t try to go forward but just possessed the ball. The fight spirit and determination to win by our team though was outstanding. I praised the team at the end of the day because of their effort."
Clavijo on this weekend's game at Real Salt Lake:
"Every game we have played against Salt Lake has been a battle. I don’t expect this game to be any different. They are fighting for their (playoff) lives. They are still mathematically alive. I know it would be extremely important for them to not only to knock Colorado out of the Rocky Mountain Cup but also playoff contention."
Rapids Extend Streak vs. Chivas USA: The Colorado Rapids extended their home undefeated streak against Chivas USA to five games with the 1-1 tie on Sunday. Colorado are now 1-0-4 all-time against Chivas USA in the Centennial State. The overall series remains tied as it now stands as 3-3-4.
Rocky Mountain Cup: The Colorado Rapids will look to clinch the Rocky Mountain Cup on Real Salt Lake’s home field for the third consecutive year this Saturday. If the Rapids beat Salt Lake on Saturday they will continue to hold the Rocky Mountain Cup for another year with one game still to go this year. If the teams tie or Salt Lake wins on Saturday the champion will be decided on October 20 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Rapids Lose Gomez: Herculez Gomez became the second Rapids player to tear his ACL this season when he did it in training on Wednesday. Gomez joins Dan Gargan on the season-ending injury list. The Las Vegas-raised Gomez tore his right ACL and the lateral meniscus in the same knee. He will have surgery to repair it and will be out 6-9 months.
