Tony Cascio scored two in final tuneup

Preseason Scrimmage: Rapids 4, Col. School of Mines 0

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Saturday, March 3, 2012) – The Colorado Rapids cruised to a 4-0 win over the Colorado School of Mines in the club’s final preseason scrimmage ahead of First Kick, next Saturday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m. against the Columbus Crew at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Rookie Tony Cascio scored twice in three minutes in the first half, and midfielder Jaime Castrillón scored the other two as the Rapids closed their preseason schedule.
Starting the match with an experienced lineup, the Rapids dominated possession from the opening whistle but didn’t break through until the 30th minute, when Cascio took an Omar Cummings pass and fired home a shot to the far post from 15 yards. Just three minutes later, he scored again on nearly an exact copy of the first goal, taking down a Castrillón pass before shooting.
The Rapids added another goal before halftime as good combination play got Castrillón behind the defense, where he finished from close range. In the second half, the Colombian midfielder scored again, after quick touches from Wells Thompson and Brian Mullan found him five yards out with an open net.
The game was the first action for Martín Rivero in a Rapids uniform, and the Argentinean midfielder looked comfortable with his new team. The Rapids had nearly all the possession during the match and had chances to add to their lead throughout, with Brian Mullan creating many opportunities throughout the second half.
