Hector Cano and his wife, Lara, have been Colorado Rapids season ticket holder since moving to Colorado in the spring of 2010 from San Antonio, Texas.
In his first year, he got to see the Rapids win their first MLS Cup championship. This past week, it was Cano who claimed a big victory.
A few weeks ago Cano was catching up on the Rapids by visiting ColoradoRapids.com when he saw the story on the Fly With the Rapids contest, presented by Verizon Wireless. Like many others, Cano decided to enter - but never expected to win.
Good thing he entered.
"I thought it was a spam email," Cano told ColoradoRapids.com via email on how he learned he was the winner. "Until I remembered entering for the trip through the Rapids website. I found out via a text from my wife and remember being in shock, because I'm the 'I never win anything guy.'"
Cano was still in disbelief until he spoke with Colorado Rapids sponsorship coordinator Savannah Reading, who confirmed the fact and gave him the details of the prize.
On behalf of Rapids partner, Verizon Wireless, Cano won a trup to Portland to watch the Rapids play the Timbers on Sunday, June 23, along with two nights accomodation, Rapids swag, and $400 in spending money.
"We could not be more excited or appreciative," Cano said. "We are truly thankful to the Colorado Rapids organization for this opportunity."
It wasn't a difficult decision to pick his guests for the trip.
"My lovely wife, Lara, and beautiful daughter Salma will accompany me," Cano said. "Being active-duty Air Force and a college and club coach, I don't get to see and spend as much time with them as I should or would like to. This is a much appreciated and well overdue vacation."
Cano, a Senior Academy Military Training non-commissioned Officer in the U.S. Air Force, is also the head coach of the Women's Soccer team at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School, as well as a coach for the Pride Soccer Club in Colorado Springs.
He has been to many games at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, but has never had the chance to support his Rapids away from home - until this week.
"This will be the first time," Cano said of watching the team on the road. "We look forward to taking great pride in sporting the burgundy at Jeld-Wen Field!"
Sunday's match at Portland kicks off at 5 p.m MT and will be shown broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
