COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Friday, October 4, 2013) – The Colorado Rapids and Special Olympics Colorado will host a final match in 2013 this Saturday, October 5 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, with the Special Olympics Rapids team taking on their counterparts from Special Olympics Washington. The match will take place at 4 p.m. MT and is free and open to the public, taking place just four hours before the Rapids take on the Sounders on the same field. Supporters interested in watching the match can enter Dick’s Sporting Goods Park through Gate G.
The partnership between the Colorado Rapids and Special Olympics Colorado is in its second season and has included interaction with Rapids stars and weekend experiences with FC Dallas/Special Olympics Texas here in Denver, and in Portland, Ore., with the Portland Timbers/Special Olympics Oregon team. The program is made possible through the generosity of Kroenke Sports Charities’ Teammates for Kids, in addition to financial and in-kind support from adidas, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Coca-Cola and the Rapids.
Throughout the 2013 season, the Rapids Special Olympics Unified athletes have been showcased in front of Rapids fans through the stadium video screen, social media, and a unique Special Olympics section on the Rapids website that includes athlete and coach bios and blogs that highlight the experiences of athletes, partners, coaches and Rapids staff from various events and matches. The team has received coaching instruction and mentoring from Colorado Rapids players.
The Rapids face the Seattle Sounders this Saturday, October 5 at 8 p.m. MT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the second-to-last home game of the 2013 regular season, and the match is crucial for MLS Cup Playoff positioning.
