Rapids rookie Deshorn Brown earns first call up to senior Jamaican National Team

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Sunday, October 6, 2013) –Colorado Rapids forward Deshorn Brown has been selected by the Jamaican National Team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the final two games in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. Jamaica visits the United States on October 11 in Kansas City before hosting Honduras on October 15 in Kingston.

"Everyone at the Rapids is thrilled for this opportunity that Deshorn has earned with the Jamaican National Team, and last night we saw what he can do on a big stage," said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. "His hard work and strong performances throughout this season have turned heads, made him a Rookie of the Year contender, and got him this chance with his country. This is also a credit to the work that Oscar Pareja and our coaching staff have done with Deshorn to help him develop and compete at a high level."
Brown, 22, is a Rookie of the Year candidate in his first professional season, having been drafted 6th overall by the Rapids in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The speedy striker has nine goals in 29 appearances (21 starts), leading Colorado, and is also third on the team with four assists (trailing only fellow Rapids player Dillon Powers among MLS rookies in the category). The native of Manchester, Jamaica has previously participated with Jamaica at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels, but this is his first appearance in camp with the full National Team.

Jamaica is currently in last place in the six-team final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with four points from the first eight match, but still has hope of reaching fourth place in the standings after the final two games. The top three teams from the region will qualify automatically for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with the fourth place team playing a home-and-home series with New Zealand for an additional spot in the tournament.
The Rapids are back in action this Wednesday against the San Jose Earthquakes, which will be broadcast live on Altitude and kicks off at 8:30 p.m. MT. The Rapids return home on October 19 for Fan Appreciation Night and Colorado’s last home game of the regular season, where they’ll battle Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 4 p.m. MT. Tickets to the match, as well as tickets for potential home playoff matches, are available by calling 303-825-GOAL or visiting www.ColoradoRapids.com.
