Colorado Rapids defender Brenton Griffiths undergoes shoulder surgery

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Wednesday, November 13, 2013) –Colorado Rapids defender Brenton Griffiths has undergone a successful surgery on his right shoulder, and is expected to miss approximately four months while recovering. The procedure, to repair a torn labrum in the defender’s right shoulder, was performed on Tuesday afternoon by Rapids Team Doctor Wayne Gersoff at Advanced Orthopedics in Denver.

Griffiths, 22, was acquired by the Rapids in the 2013 Supplemental Draft after playing his junior and senior seasons at the University of South Florida. He played one match for Colorado in his rookie season, entering as a late sub in a 1-1 draw at the San Jose Earthquakes on May 18. For the Rapids Reserves, he was the only player to feature in each of the 14 matches this season, starting 12. His shoulder was initially injured in the Reserves’ 3-1 win over Harrisburg City Islanders on June 8.

The Rapids have finished the 2013 season, setting several franchise records during the regular season and qualifying for the playoffs for the 12th time in team history. The club is expected to have the 11th overall selection in January’s MLS SuperDraft, after which the team will reconvene in Denver for preseason.
