Last week, the Rapids were without forward Vicente Sánchez due to the turf surface at BC Place in Vancouver, but that did not stop them from a 2-1 victory. They will be without him once again this weekend, and this time it is for a completely different reason.
“He’s not on this trip because he’s expecting the birth of his first child,” Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni told ColoradoRapids.com. “I think it’ll be one of the most meaningful moments of his life, something that transcends soccer, and it’s important to give him the time with his wife.”
Sánchez leads the team with four goals this season, all scored on penalty kicks. The Uruguayan forward told ColoradoRapids.com that he and his wife expect their daughter to arrive today. When she is born, the Uruguayan forward will join teammate Joe Nasco as a brand new parent; Nasco and his wife welcomed a baby girl in March.
The Rapids kick off against Toronto FC at 2 p.m. MT today at BMO Field. Fans can catch the action live on Altitude TV with Rapids play-by-play man Richard Fleming and former Rapids and U.S. Men’s National Team player Marcelo Balboa. Not near a TV? Supporters group Centennial 38 will be hosting the official away game viewing party at Absinthe House in Boulder, where the first 25 fans there will get a free ticket in the Supporters Terrace to an upcoming Rapids game.
