Dillon Serna is in Portland to participate in tonight's 2014 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find another more deserving of the honor.
It has been quite a journey for Serna who chooses not to focus on a rather frustrating 2013 season in which he booked only 13 minutes of playing time. “You can’t focus on that,” Serna told ColoradoRapids.com. “I just need to play my game and the opportunities will come, whether that’s with the national team, the Homegrown Game, or just first team minutes here.”
Rapids defender Shane O'Neill has also been selected for the Homegrown Game. He has been nursing a knee injury in recent weeks and, though he too traveled, is not expected to play.
Since making his MLS debut on October 27, 2013 against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Serna has become an impact player for the first team. In 18 appearances this season, the 20-year-old from Brighton, Colorado has notched 12 starts, three assists, and two goals.
Serna’s hard work has been recognized and rewarded with a trip to Portland where he and 19 of the league's top Homegrown players will take on the Portland Timbers U-23s at 8 p.m MT on Monday, August 4. Of the game, Serna says: “It’s huge for the league and for the homegrown guys; they deserve it.”
And so do you, Dillon. So do you.
