Chivas 2005-2014

As we bid farewell to Chivas USA, here are some moments to remember

With confirmation that Chivas USA has played its final match, a 1-0 home win over San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, here are some facts and stats behind the 28 regular season meetings with the Colorado Rapids. Head-to-head, the Rapids edged the all-time series 14-7-7. The last match between the two provided Chivas USA with a 2-1 win at StubHub Center on October 11.

May 14, 2005: Jeff Cunningham (78') scored the winner in the first meeting, which took place at Mile High Stadium. The Rapids triumphed 2-1. Chris Henderson opened the scoring with his last-ever goal for the club in what was his penultimate appearance.

In that 2005 season, a first in MLS for Chivas USA, they met the Rapids four times. Colorado won three of the games, and the other match was a 1-1 tie.

June 3, 2006: Chivas USA would win at the fifth time of asking, enjoying a 4-1 victory at the Home Depot Center. Dedi Ben Dayan scored the Rapids' only goal. Chivas were gifted an early advantage, when Mike Petke scored an own goal beyond Joe Cannon.

Chivas USA would beat the Rapids twice in 2006, both in California. The two matches in Denver were ties (1-1 and 3-3).

September 16, 2007: Colin Clark netted an equalizer 14 minutes from time in the only meeting of the season at the newly-opened Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The match ended 1-1.

The Rapids claimed their first win over Chivas USA in eight attempts - a 2-1 victory - thanks to a last-minute goal from Omar Cummings in the penultimate regular season game of 2007.

For the next four seasons, the teams would meet just twice a year. During this period, the Rapids recorded their biggest-ever win over Chivas USA, a 4-0 victory at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on August 8, 2009 (they matched this scoreline in 2012). The Rapids scored all four goals in the first half. Pablo Mastroeni began the rout, followed by a hat-trick from Conor Casey. Omar Cummings enjoyed three assists that day.

The first meeting of 2009, a 2-1 home victory for Chivas USA, was the last time the Rapids would lose to their Western Conference rivals until the 3-1 defeat at DSGP on May 11 this year. The Rapids won eight of the next 11 contests.

From 2012 onwards, the two teams would meet each other three times a season. In their final season, Chivas USA would get the better of the Rapids in two of the three meetings. The Rapids' 3-0 home win on July 25 was their last victory, and last shutout, of 2014.

Players to have featured for both sides: Martin Rivero, Marvin Chavez, Nathan Sturgis, Nick LaBrocca and Carlos Alvarez.

Also, Chivas USA's final head coach Wilmer Cabrera served as Colorado’s assistant coach, under Oscar Pareja, for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He led the Rapids Reserves in those two years to a cumulative 10-11-3 record. Cabrera also had former Rapids assistant coach Paul Caffrey on his technical staff, as well as former Rapids goalkeeper Paul Grafer.
