Colorado Rapids transfer Deshorn Brown to Vålerenga

Colorado Rapids announced on Tuesday the transfer of striker Deshorn Brown to Norwegian side Vålerenga. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Deshorn came to our club through the draft process and, right from the beginning, proved he had the talent to go far in the game,” said Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director.

“Although we are sad to see him go, this move is an opportunity Deshorn wanted and, on the club side, gives us the flexibility to continue strengthening the squad as we move forward.

“On behalf of everyone at the Rapids, we want to thank Deshorn for everything he has done for the club and we wish him the best of luck in the future."

After attending the University of Central Florida, Brown was selected by the Rapids with the sixth overall pick (first round) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

In his first season, he earned the club’s Golden Boot award with 10 goals, leading all MLS rookies and just one shy of the MLS rookie scoring record. He also finished second behind teammate Dillon Powers for MLS Rookie of the Year award.

Brown repeated his scoring feats in 2014, winning the Rapids’ Golden Boot again with another 10 goals. In addition, he netted his first professional career hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Orlando City in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on June 14 of that year.

At the end of his opening MLS season, Brown earned his first international cap for Jamaica with 90 minutes in the 2-0 defeat to the United States in a World Cup qualifier on October 11, 2013. He has gone on to make seven appearances for his country, scoring two goals.

Based in the capital Oslo, Vålerenga are one of the most famous clubs in Norwegian football. They have won the country’s League title, the Tippeligaen, five times and the Norwegian cup four times. They have played 14 games in the European Cup/Champions League and 24 games in the Uefa Cup/Europa League. Their most recent European campaign was in season 2011-12.

They finished sixth in the Tippeligaen last season and start the 2015 campaign at home to Strømsgodset on April 5.

Rapids will play their 2015 Home Opener at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday when they host New York City FC. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm MT. For more information or to purchase tickets please call 303-825-GOAL or click HERE.
