Colorado Rapids today announced that midfielder Juan Ramírez has been loaned to U.D. Almería of the Spanish second division for a period of six months. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Juan is a young player who we identified and then helped to develop in MLS,” said Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director. “We believe this represents a great opportunity for the player and our club. We wish him the best of luck in Spain and will monitor his progress carefully.”
During his first season with the Rapids, Ramirez appeared in 27 matches (15 starts), adding a goal and three assists. His lone strike of the season came in stoppage time of the 3-1 home win over Real Salt Lake, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the battle for the Rocky Mountain Cup.
Ramirez joined the Rapids as a Young Designated Player on February 20, 2015 from Argentine side, Argentinos Juniors. The 5’8”, 150lb midfielder amassed 81 games for Argentinos Juniors, scoring five goals prior to his arrival in Major League Soccer.
After 22 games, U.D. Almería currently sits in 20th place of Liga Adelante after beginning the season with a record of 3-10-9 (18 points). Before this season, Almería had competed in the Spanish top division in six of the last eight years, including a trip to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey in 2011.
The Rapids season starts on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. MT on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes, with the Home Opener at Dick's Sporting Goods Park against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, March 12 at 5 p.m. MT.
