Commerce City Colorado (Thursday August 9 2007) – The Colorado Rapids Academy U-17s clinched the Super Y League Rocky Mountain Division championship Wednesday night with a 2-2 tie against the Colorado Rush.
The Rapids Academy used 32 different players to compile a 5-1-2 record and win the division by one point over Real Salt Lake and RSL Arizona. Many of the players who played for the U-17s were eligible for the U-16 division but in accordance to the Rapids Academy’s player development philosophies played up one to two years.
The U-16 Rapids Academy team were the runners-up in their age bracket finishing behind only RSL Arizona.
In other Rapids Academy news the club was selected by US Soccer as one of 64 to comprise the first US Soccer Development Academy league.
"The Development Academy provides a tremendous opportunity for our club Crookham said. "US Soccer has finally created an environment in which player development is more important than winning a trophy every weekend."
Beginning this fall the Rapids Academy will sponsor U-16 and U-18 sides in the West Region. They will take on teams from Colorado Washington Oregon and Northern California. Competition for the new league will begin following the High School Championships.
