This past weekend the Colorado Rapids Development Academy U-16 and U-18 teams competed in the 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase in Phoenix, Arizona, facing teams from across the country and outside their division.
U-16 Development Academy:
The U-16's had a tough start to tournament, dropping their opening game 4-1 to Empire United (New York), with the lone goal coming from second half sub Eric Kronenberg in the 59th minute.
The group then tied the Players Development Academy (New Jersey) 1-1 with another goal from Kronenberg, and held on to early goals from Geno Bigelow and Ricardo Perez in defeating Connecticut's South Central Premier 2-1 in the final game.
U-18 Development Academy:
The U-18’s began the weekend with a 2-2 tie with Empire United. After surrendering two quick goals in the first six minutes, Rapids forward Idrissa Camara scored in the 78th and 90th minutes to secure the point for Colorado.
On day two, Colorado were down a man against the Players Development Academy after forward James Rogers picked up his second yellow card in the second half. The New Jersey side took advantage and score with only 10 minutes to play to claim the 1-0 win.
The third game ended in similar heartbreaking fashion. Midfielder Kevin Aguilar gave the Rapids the lead in the 34th minute, but South Central Premier tied the game just after halftime and scored the winner with only five minutes remaining for the 2-1 win.
Both teams will regroup and train for the next few months before resuming play in the Frontier Division in April, looking to improve on identical 1-5-1 records.
