For the fifth year in a row, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is the site of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) boys Soccer State Championship matches, with the title games of 3A, 4A, and 5A being played on Saturday, November 9:
- 4A Championship: Air Academy vs Cheyenne Mountain at 10:30 a.m.
- 3A Championship: Colorado Academy vs Classical Academy at 1 p.m.
- 5A Championship: Pine Creek vs Rock Canyon at 3:30 p.m.
The box office at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and tickets are $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.
The opening match will see Air Academy face Cheyenne Mountain for the 4A State Championship (categories are determined by the size of the school, with 5A being the largest). Air Academy, ranked 2nd, were the 2010 state champions and have an 18-1-0 record in the 2013 season, led by junior Austin Dewing with 23 goals this season. Cheyenne Mountain are ranked 7th and led by midfielder captain David McDermed with 13 goals. Cheyenne holds a 16-3-0 record, and fell to Air Academy 4-3 on October 1.
In the 3A title match, Colorado Academy will face the Classical Academy. Colorado Academy are undefeated this year with an 18-0-1 record will look to win their second consecutive title, taking on the 18-1-0 Classical Academy. Colorado, ranked 6th among 3A schools, have only allowed two goals against the entire season. Classical, who fell in both the 2010 and 2011 championship games, are 18-1-0 and led by sophomore Robby Jacobs who has scored 30 goals this season, third most in the state, followed by freshman Titus Grant with 22 goals.
For the 5A state championship, Pine Creek will take on Rock Canyon. Pine Creek defeated the 2012 state champions Boulder High School 1-0 on Wednesday with an overtime goal from Alex Cullen to send them to their first State Championship game in school history. Pine Creek’s 16-1-2 record has been guided by senior Michael Steffy with 11 goals and six assists, and junior Nic Bannister with eight goals and 11 assists. Rock Canyon, ranked 3rd in the state, are undefeated with a 16-0-2 record, and will look to upset their 1st ranked opponents to win their first title since 2008. Senior Josh Kracke has scored a career and team high 10 goals this season.
