COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, April 10, 2014) – The Colorado Rapids acquired a fourth round 2015 MLS SuperDraft pick from Chivas USA in a trade on Tuesday, sending midfielder Martín Rivero to the LA-based club. The Rapids had parted ways with the Argentinian midfielder in the offseason but retained his rights, and the player was re-signed by MLS this week before the trade to Chivas USA.
“Over the last several years, our increased emphasis on scouting MLS SuperDraft prospects has yielded great results,” said Paul Bravo, the Rapids Vice President of Soccer Operations and Technical Director. “Getting another pick is always helpful, and will give us more options in the draft next January. We want to thank Martín again for his service to the club and wish him the best with Chivas.”
The Rapids currently hold picks in the anticipated four rounds of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, as well as two in the fourth round of the draft. Colorado traded its natural first round selection for Danny Mwanga, but acquired another first round pick from FC Dallas in the deal that saw Oscar Pareja join the Texas club as their new head coach this offseason. The Rapids also hold a conditional pick from New York in the Andre Akpan trade early last season.
Colorado travels to Canada this weekend for a second consecutive match, facing Toronto FC at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday with a live broadcast on Altitude. The Rapids’ next home game is Saturday, April 19 against the San Jose Earthquakes at 4 p.m. MT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
