The Colorado Rapids 2 announced today the signing of 21-year-old centerback/defensive midfielder Daniel Chacon to a multi-year contract from Costa Rica’s CS Cartagines. Chacon will see out the remainder of his contract with the Liga FPD side before joining Rapids 2 upon the opening of the secondary transfer window in July. He will occupy an international roster spot on the Rapids 2 roster, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
“We are very excited to be able to add Daniel to the Colorado Rapids system,” said Rapids 2 General Manager Brian Crookham. “Daniel is one of the most talented players in an up-and-coming generation of Costa Rican players. We look forward to integrating him into our system as quickly as possible while giving him the best possible chance to make the final roster for Costa Rica in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.”
Chacon joins Rapids 2 after spending the entirety of his career with his hometown club CS Cartagines. Following his participation in the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Chacon made his professional debut for CS Cartagines on November 19, 2017, at just 16 years old. He has gone on to make 98 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.
A member of the U-17, U-20 and U-23 Costa Rican national teams, Chacon made his senior international debut on January 31, 2022, in Costa Rica’s 0-0 draw with Mexico in World Cup Qualifying. In March 2022, Chacon started and played 90 minutes as a defensive midfielder in Costa Rica’s 2-0 win over the United States and played the final 33 minutes in their 1-0 victory over Canada. Those results earned Costa Rica a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Intercontinental Playoff.
