COMMERCE CITY, Colo. – The Colorado Rapids announced today the club has acquired Australian winger Akol Akon from Sydney FC of the A-League in Australia. Akon will join the club in July of 2027 on a contract through 2030-31 with an option for 2031-32. The agreement is pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. The deal was completed prior to the close of the Secondary Transfer Window.
“Akol is a player that has shown both uncommon physical and competitive maturity in his performances in the A league,” said Colorado Rapids Sporting Director Fran Taylor. “At just 17 he is already making an impact for Sydney FC and we believe a player with his mentality can achieve his considerable potential.”
Akon, 17, joined Sydney FC in July of 2025 to begin his professional career. Since then, the winger has made 28 appearances for the club across their First and Second Teams. After featuring mainly for Sydney FC II, Akon made his debut with the First Team on August 9, 2025, against Sydney United in the Australia Cup, becoming the youngest player to debut for the club in their history. Since that point, he set multiple historic milestones, including becoming the youngest player to start in both an A-League Final Series match and the league's Grand Final.
During his time in the A-League, Akon made 11 appearances for Sydney, logging 3 assists in 294 minutes of play. Apart from league play, he also featured for the club in their 2026 Australia Cup run, tallying three assists in his three appearances. Akon’s performance this past season earned him the Sydney FC 2026 Rising Star Award. During the active 2026/27 season, Akon has logged six assists for the club across all competitions, which is a current club high.
"Akol is a young player with a lot of potential,” said Colorado Rapids Head Coach Matt Wells. “We are already a very young group, so this is another addition of a young player with all of his best years ahead of him. Once he is within our environment, we will be able to develop him in line with our adventurous style of play.”
Akon has featured for Australia at the youth international level with the U-17 group, having made his international debut in February of 2025 against South Korea. Since then, the winger has made multiple appearances for the U-17 side, including three in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup.
