The Colorado Rapids announced today the club has placed defender Axel Sjöberg on waivers and removed him from the active roster.

Sjöberg, 28, spent the past five seasons with the Rapids after being selected by the team in the first round (No. 14) of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. The Stockholm, Sweden, native made 92 total appearances for the club, netting three goals across and adding an assist in that span. Sjöberg’s best season with the Rapids came in 2016 when he helped the club reach the Western Conference Championship and was nominated for MLS Best Defender of the Year.

“Axel has been a top professional for this club,” said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager. “His contributions, particularly in our 2016 season, will always be remembered and we would like to thank him for his time here and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
