Kevin Doyle to join Colorado Rapids early

Kevin Doyle Against Brazil

Colorado Rapids will add striker Kevin Doyle to their roster by the end of May, pending receipt of his P-1 visa and ITC, after the Irishman agreed an early settlement of his contract at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 31-year-old signed for the Rapids as a Designated Player in March but was originally due to arrive in July when his contract expired at the English Championship team.

However, after Wolves missed out on the Play-Offs, Rapids pursued an advanced release. Now, as a “free agent”, Doyle will fly over to Colorado in the coming weeks and complete his move prior to the closure of the primary transfer window on May 12.

“We always thought this might be a possibility if Wolves did not achieve their target of promotion,” said Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director.

“We know he is a proven goalscorer at a high level. We are confident he will not only help our younger players in their progression but also add to the group.

“We’d like to thank Wolves for their cooperation throughout this process and we wish them the best of luck next season. Meanwhile we look forward to welcoming Kevin to our club later this month.”

Doyle has enjoyed a high-caliber career in English football since joining Reading in 2005, scoring 92 goals in 352 appearances overall.

He has played in the Premier League this season and, having amassed 61 caps with 14 goals, remains a crucial part of the Republic of Ireland side.

Meanwhile, the Rapids’ next home game is against San Jose Earthquakes on Friday, May 8 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, kickoff is scheduled at 8:00 p.m. on Univision Deportes. Learn more at www.coloradorapids.com.
