Storylines to Watch:

The injury bug could hinder the Sounders’ playoff hopes

The Sounders’ center back Chad Marshall left at halftime against the Union and was noticeably absent against the LA Galaxy on Sunday after a head-to-head collision with Philadelphia’s Cory Burke. The Sounders’ defense was nearly impenetrable over the course of their club record nine-game winning streak, with Marshall serving as their anchor. If the injury looms, Marshall’s absence could be a major blow for the Sounders as they are in the midst of a tight playoff race, currently in sixth place, just three points ahead of the LA Galaxy.

In addition to Marshall, the Sounders were without midfielder Harry Shipp (hamstring) while left back Brad Smith was forced from Sunday’s contest early due to a right hamstring strain.

Player to Watch: Raúl Ruidíaz

Raúl Ruidíaz has been a revelation since joining Seattle Sounders FC as a Designated Player on June 29. The highly skilled Peruvian, known for wreaking havoc on opponent’s backlines, was added in hopes of providing a spark to Seattle’s attack. The 28-year-old’s nose for goal has seen him score five times, while contributing an assist, in just 843 minutes of league play. Three of those goals have come in the last four games. Ruidíaz struck twice in the first half to pace Seattle to a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. He looked comfortable and dynamic in the final third, turning in his most complete performance in MLS thus far. Seattle is 9-2-0 with him on the field.

“He’s a winner,” Seattle’s goalkeeper Stefan Frei said following the victory. “I don’t think you need to prep him on what’s at stake and what he’s here to do. That’s why we brought him to the team because he’s been successful and he’s lethal up there. He showed that again. So, it’s really nice to get him going for us.”
