Rapids to host U.S. Open Cup fifth round match with win over Orlando City

Open Cup at DSGP

COMMERCE CITY, Colo – The Colorado Rapids will host a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fifth round match should they defeat Orlando City SC on Tuesday, June 17 in a game at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

If successful against Orlando, then Colorado would face the winner of the match between Real Salt Lake and the Atlanta Silverbacks, which takes place on Saturday, June 14 in Atlanta. The date of the fifth round encounter would be either June 24 or 25.

The Rapids’ fourth round match, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on June 17 (tickets here), is Colorado’s first home U.S. Open Cup game since July 10, 2007 when the Rapids defeated the California Victory 3-1 in the third round. Orlando City, of the third-tier USL Pro, knocked the Rapids out of the tournament a year ago with a win in Florida.

Colorado has faced Real Salt Lake once before in the Open Cup, earning a 1-0 road victory over RSL in the fourth round of the 2006 tournament. The Rapids have never faced Atlanta in the tournament.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual knock-out tournament featuring teams from all levels of American soccer (from amateur through MLS) now in its 101st year, making it the oldest continuously-running soccer competition in the United States.

The exact date for the match, as well as information on purchasing fifth round tickets, will be available in the near future.
