Recap | Rapids Fall to Columbus Crew on the Road

The Colorado Rapids (10-12-1, 31 pts., 7th West) fell on the road to the Columbus Crew (6-12-5, 23 pts., 13th East) 3-0 on Saturday night at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. 

Heading into the night as winners in four of their last five matches, the Rapids looked to continue their positive run of form across against fellow MLS original club, the Columbus Crew. 

Colorado started the contest with all of the momentum, dominating possession with strong defensive play throughout the pitch. This strong play led to a handful of opportunities in the attacking end for the Rapids, but they were unable to get on the board first. 

Despite Colorado’s positive play early, it was the hosts that struck first to open the scoring. Following a corner kick, Columbus’ Santiago Rodriguez headed home a shot in the 22nd minute, giving his side a 1-0 lead. 

The Rapids almost immediately bounced back, with combination play leading to a perfect pass to Paxten Aaronson, but a solid play from the Columbus goalkeeper kept them off the board.  

Colorado continued their chances in the attacking end but would eventually head into the halftime break still with the one goal deficit. 

The Rapids forced similar pressure as they did in the first half but were unable to find the equalizer following the restart.  

Play went back and forth for most of the second half as both sides continued to look towards goal. Eventually succeeding were the hosts, who doubled their lead in the 81st minute. 

Columbus added a third in stoppage time, securing all three points in the victory.
