The Colorado Rapids (12-13-7, 43 pts., 7th West) battled San Jose Earthquakes (13-9-10, 49 pts., 5th West) to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday night at PayPal Park to claim a valuable point in the standings.
Colorado opened the midweek clash looking to claim three crucial points and gain a stronger foothold in the playoff picture.
As both sides settled into their shape and looked to establish control, San Jose began to test Colorado’s defensive organization. Even with several initial clearances by the Rapids' backline, the Earthquakes would take the early lead on a set piece header in the 15th minute.
Despite the one-goal advantage, the door remained open for Colorado, and a little over ten minutes later, Morgan Whittaker responded. A Rapids throw-in in the attacking third found Josh Atencio, who threaded the ball to Wayne Frederick near the edge of the box. Frederick dished out a pass to Whittaker, who took a left-footed touch before slotting his shot into the lower-right corner of the net.
Whittaker has now recorded goals in back-to-back matches while Frederick recorded his sixth assist of the season and Atencio tallied his fourth, with both extending their single-season career highs and bringing their respective goal contributions to eight (2G, 6A) and five (1G, 4A).
With the score even at 1-1, the Rapids backline stood firm to deny shooting opportunities while goalkeeper Nico Hansen kept a watchful eye on goal, securing attempts that made it through.
Unable to capitalize on any opportunities before the halftime whistle, the two sides remained deadlocked heading into the break.
Back on the pitch, the Rapids pressed forward in search of the go-ahead goal. With limited progress made on either side, a red card handed out to San Jose's Timo Werner put wind in Colorado's sails.
The Burgundy Boys found their breakthrough with a quick attacking sequence starting with a pass from Paxten Aaronson down the sideline to Georgi Minoungou. Minoungou serviced a ball high across the box, finding Darren Yapi on the opposite side. With a swift touch out wide, Yapi beat his first defender and, before the next could close him down, unleashed a shot to put Colorado in front.
Finding the back of the net for the fifth time this season, Yapi's goal marked his seventh goal contribution this campaign. Minoungou recorded a career-high third assist while Aaronson continued to lead the Rapids in assists, setting up his 11th goal of the season.
Colorado’s advantage wouldn’t last long, as the Rapids were also reduced to 10 men minutes later, leveling the playing field once again.
Even with a late exchange of attacks, the opportunities brought no change to the scoreboard, and the Rapids walked away with a point to show for their efforts.
