Commerce City, CO – The Pali Blues defeated the Colorado Rapids in W-League action on Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park by a score of 2-1. Lynn Williams provided both of Pal’s goals while Erin Gunther scored the Rapids’ lone goal.
The Blues came out very aggressive but the Rapids withstood the early pressure well. However, in the 26th minute Lynn Williams broke the deadlock to open the score for the Blues.
Just before halftime the Rapids had an excellent chance to equalize when Brazilian forward Samhia Simao hit the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the box.
In the second half, the Rapids came out onto the field looking like a different team. They were a lot more aggressive and took the game to the Blues. However, it was Pali who extended their lead with Williams’ second goal of the afternoon when she headed a cross into the back of the net.
The Rapids didn’t give up and kept going at the Blues defense. This resulted in a goal from Erin Gunther in the 70th minute. Amanda McMullan played Gunther through who kept her cool to halve the Blues lead.
The goal gave the Rapids a new sense of belief and for the remainder of the game they put Pali Blues under constant pressure. Unfortunately they couldn’t finalize one of their chances and the score remained 1-2 for the Blues.
“I’m very disappointed with the way we played in the first half. We lacked aggressiveness, will and passion. Pali Blues are a very good team, and you can’t afford to play for only 45 minutes against them,” said Alex Balog, Colorado Rapids Women Assistant Coach.”Our second half was a world of difference. Even although we conceded early on, the girls kept going and we were able to pull one back. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. Hopefully we can carry this second half into the game against Santa Clarita next Thursday.”
The Rapids return to action when they play Santa Clarita at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Thursday, June 14th at 6 pm.
