Take a look at the photo above and give a slient clap. That's what the gentlemen on the Rapids 2012 Movember team look like at the end of November.
For 30 days these men endured the growth of mustaches and goatees - and possibly a little bit of ridicule - in support of the national effort to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.
The Rapids Front Office team raised over $1200 (with one day to go), helping the collective League-wide effort through MLS W.O.R.K.S raise over $37,000 for the campaign.
In the back row (left to right): Matt McKinney, Lionel Orozco, Frank Valdez, Ossie Hamrick, Wayne Brant, Chris Hoffner, Paul Bravo and President Tim Hinchey. Front row (L-R): Chris Greenley, Kevin Olson, David Burke, Brian Crookham, and David Lindholm. Not pictured but also on the team: Jordan Allerding, Caleb Alexander, Greg Harris, and Alex Teal and 'Mo Sista' Val Holland.
Why Men's Health? 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 6 American men and 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Rates of prostate cancer cases in men are comparable to the rates of breast cancer cases in women.
In 2011, the first year of MLS W.O.R.K.S. league-wide Movember campaign, players, supporters and staff throughout the League joined together to raise approximately $45,000. To date, globally over 1.1 million people have participated, raising $174 million USD.
