Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today it has signed 2017 MLS SuperDraft selection Sam Hamilton to an MLS contract for 2017, with options for 2018, 2019, and 2020.
“Sam performed at a very high level over the course of preseason and we are confident that he will be a solid addition to our roster,” said Sporting Director Pádraig Smith. “He gives us strong depth at central midfield, and we look forward to watching him continue to develop as a player and to him making a positive and impactful contribution to our club in the coming years.”
Selected in the first round (15th overall), Hamilton officially joins the Rapids after helping the University of Denver reach the 2016 College Cup following the program’s second consecutive unbeaten regular season. The Evergreen, Colorado native served as team captain in his final season, and started all 24 matches for the Pioneers. In his four collegiate seasons, Hamilton appeared in a total of 83 matches, which ranks him first in DU’s Division I history.
“Sam is technically very good on the ball and can cover a lot of ground in the center of the field,” said Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni. “His work ethic, positive attitude and mentality since his arrival has earned him the right to be a member of this club. We’re happy to officially welcome Sam to the Rapids.”
