Colorado struck early when just five minutes into the match Mehdi Ballouchy played a ball from the left side of the pitch that took a big bounce over FC Dallas’ Adrian Serioux and right to Herculez Gomez. Gomez finished the one-on-one opportunity in the side netting past Dario Sala for the Rapids’ quickest score of the season. The goal was also Colorado’s first on the road in the first half this year.
The Rapids would take their 1-0 advantage into the halftime break but not before ‘keep Bouna Coudoul would be tested on multiple occasions. Many of the Hoop’s shots rebounded off the Senegalese goalkeeper with FC Dallas having several second chance looks at the goal but to no avail. In the 45th minute Dominic Oduro had an open second chance look at the net only to push it over the crossbar.
FC Dallas evened the score at one apiece in the 49th minute on a penalty kick from Kenny Cooper. Coudoul left the box to make a play on the ball but without cleanly knocking it from danger the ball got played into the center of the area. Facundo Erpen was then called for the costly foul as he battled with Oduro for position. The penalty kick was Dallas’ first of the season.
In a similar turn of events Coundoul was again found outside of his box trying to make a play on the ball when Cooper was able to center it to Juan Toja who was now looking at a wide open net. Toja put the home side up 2-1 in the 64th minute for his second goal of the season.
Colorado wasted no time bringing themselves back into the match. Just three minutes later Terry Cooke found Christian Gomez on the right side of the pitch near the end line. Without hesitation Gomez chipped the ball across the face of the goal where an oncoming Casey buried it in the back of the net with a strong header. The score marked the fourth straight contest in which Casey has tallied a goal or an assist.
Coundoul would come up with several more score-preserving saves throughout the remainder of the match as the Rapids would come away with a point in Dallas for the first time since October 8 2005.
Colorado now heads home where they will host three straight matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park starting with a Sunday July 27 tilt with the Columbus Crew at 7:30 pm MT.
