Cummings brace pushes Rapids past Union

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Another home game for the Colorado Rapids and another comfortable victory.

The Rapids won their fifth straight home game with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night. The team extended their home undefeated streak to 10 games in row.

Two goals early in the first half from the returning Omar Cummings and a second-half close range poach by Wells Thompson secured the victory.

Quincy Amarikwa put the icing on the cake with an 86th minute tap-in to take the Rapids closer to the playoffs. Jack McInerney scored a consolation for the Union in the 90th minute.

Much of the pre-match build-up was about the new Rapids combination up front of Cummings and Macoumba Kandji. It didn’t take long for that partnership to bear fruit.

In the eighth minute, Kosuke Kimura picked up the ball deep inside his own half and ran hard down the flank. Kandji took his pass and crossed to an unmarked Cummings, who slid it past Brad Knighton in the Union goal.

Seven minutes later, the Philadelphia defense again left Cummings unmarked from a Jamie Smith corner. A grateful Cummings volleyed in from close range to get the Rapids off to a perfect start.

Thompson’s goal, his second in two straight home games, came after Pablo Mastroeni blasted a long-range free kick straight at Knighton. The goalkeeper spilled a routine catch into Thompson’s path, and the midfielder made no mistake with his finish.

By now, it was all Colorado and a wave of attacks eventually resulted in Amarikwa’s debut goal for the Rapids. The second-half substitute converted an unselfish cross from Kandji, and the game was as good as done.

The Union, however, earned a consolation in the waning minutes. McInerney calmly side-footed past Matt Pickens after mopping up Drew Moor's whiffed clearance.

The Rapids inch closer to their first appearance in the postseason in four seasons with a record of 11-7-8 and 41 points. The Union are not yet eliminated from playoff contention despite dropping 12 points off the pace.
