Axel Sjӧberg joins the Rapids with the 14th pick of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft after four years at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was named to the All-Big East first team and was the winner of Marquette’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2014. Three times in 2014 he was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week.
A preseason All-America pick by numerous soccer publications, he ranked as high as No. 22 on the TopDrawerSoccer.com 'Men's National Top 100' list and was recognized as one of the '10 best defenders in college' soccer by TopDrawerSoccer.com.
In 2013, he was named Marquette’s Most Valuable Player and was a first team All-Big East pick. He also was named to the second team All-America squad and first team all-Big East by College Sports Madness. Sjӧberg was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the Big East men’s soccer championship and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
He was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com men’s national top 100 list and No. 5 on the website’s Big East Conference Top 20 list. He also earned Capital One Academic All-District 6 honors and placed on the Academic All-America ballot.
During the summer, he played for the Thunder Bay Chill in the USL’s Premier Development League (PDL) and was named Best Defender for the second straight season as the Chill won the PDL regular season title and advance to the league’s championship final.
Sjӧberg was named Player of the Year honors in 2010 with Sollentuna United FF (a member of the Swedish second division) after helping the team finish second in the Norra Svealeand section and advance to the Swedish Cup. He served as the club's captain seven times from 2002 and was the recipient of the club’s Player of the Year award four times.
Competing at Everton's home stadium, Goodison Park, he led Sollentuna to a 2-1 victory over the Toffees' reserves in 2010. He trained under Paul Lindholm and assistant coach Anders Limpar, who played in more than 160 matches with Premier League clubs Arsenal and Everton. Sjӧberg also played soccer with highly regarded Djurgårdens IF from 1997-2009, and played center in ice hockey while growing up.
