Match Report: Serna’s late goal helps Rapids advance to Round of 16 of U.S. Open Cup

The Colorado Rapids will move on to the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Dillon Serna’s 84th minute strike was enough to defeat a pesky Switchbacks side that was out to make up for last year’s 4-1 drubbing in the same round of this competition.

First Half

The first half started slow, but soon the home side who would threaten through Dominique Badji. Through on goal, he attempted to lift the ball over goalkeeper William Thompson, but his shot sailed over the bar.

At the half hour mark Dillon Powers had a similar opportunity, but his shot was saved. The rebound fell in a dangerous area in the six yard box, but no Rapids player was there to convert.

Second Half

The second half was immediately more entertaining than the first as the Rapids pushed for the opener. Sam Cronin put in a cross for Conor Doyle who failed to control the ball, but the Rapids were gaining momentum.

Colorado started pouring on the pressure which resulted in shots, but they failed to really threaten Thompson, who only had two saves. He did have to be alert though when Dillon Serna found space for a strike from the left side of the box, but was up to the challenge and pushed the ball aside.

The Rapids finally made a breakthrough when Serna lashed a shot in from outside of the box after a poor clearance off a corner. This was the Colorado native’s third goal in the competition after he netted twice against the same opponent in this round last season in a 4-1 victory.

Luis Solignac almost doubled the lead for the Rapids in second half extra time but his side volley careened off the post.

Serna’s strike was enough to see the Rapids advance to the Round of 16 of the competition for the third consecutive season.

The Rapids return to MLS action against the Chicago Fire this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. MT (Altitude) in their first regular season match since the Copa America Centenario break. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.ColoradoRapids.com or call 303-825-GOAL.
