With a failed World Cup qualifying campaign fresh in the rearview mirror, the US national team will use the Nov. 14 friendly vs. Portugal to launch a youth movement, as caretaker head coach Dave Sarachan selected plenty of fresh faces among the 21 players called into training camp on Tuesday in advance of the USA’s final match of 2017. Eight of the players hail from MLS.
The New York Red Bulls' 18-year-old standout Tyler Adams, FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez, Schalke's Weston McKennie (like Gonzalez, an FCD academy product), Sheffield United's Cameron Carter-Vickers and US Under-17 forward Josh Sargent headline the battalion of young newcomers on Sarachan's list.
More than half of the players on this month's roster are 24 years old and younger, while three are taking part in their first USMNT camp ever and another two are seeking their first US caps.
Others with slightly more US experience, but little of late, include Philadelphia's 16-goal scorer CJ Sapong and New England's 25-year-old Kelyn Rowe and teammate 24-year-old Juan Agudelo.
The USMNT will face world No. 3-ranked Portugal at Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa on Nov. 14 in Leiria (3:45 p.m. ET | FS1, UniMas, UDN).
One talented youngster who won't be making this trip: Christian Pulisic, who is sitting this one out after a heavy slate for club and country over the past year-plus.
