Acosta, Rosenberry and Rubio pen long-term deals with the Colorado Rapids

Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today a three-year contract extension for US international midfielder Kellyn Acosta with a club option for 2022 and 2023, and a three-year contract extension for both US international defender Keegan Rosenberry and Chilean international forward Diego Rubio.

“We are pleased to announce contract extensions for these three key players,” said Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager, Pádraig Smith. “We targeted these players over the past 12 months and in Kellyn, Keegan and Diego we have players who have a demonstrated track record of production in MLS and who fit our style of play perfectly.  As they enter their prime we believe they will be key contributors for us in the coming years.  These deals demonstrate our club’s commitment to investing in talented young players and building a strong core, and highlight the confidence that these players have in our future.”

Acosta joined Colorado in July of last year from FC Dallas and made an immediate impact on the pitch as he would go on to score a goal in his first two league appearance for the club. The Plano, Texas native appeared in 12 matches, all from the start, for the Rapids scoring two goals and contributing three assists. Internationally, Acosta has 23 USMNT caps and has scored two goals for the senior team. Acosta’s contract extension is effective this 2019 season with club options for 2022 and 2023.

“I want to thank the Rapids organization for believing in me,” said Acosta. “I’m ready to begin my first full season as a Rapid and look forward to playing in front of the Rapids supporters for years to come.”

Keegan Rosenberry became a Rapids player on December 19, 2018 as part of the trade with the Philadelphia Union. The talented right-back made a total of 80 appearances, 76 from the start, for the Union as he would notch three goals and contribute six assists between 2016-18. Rosenberry was also part of Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT January camp earlier this year. Rosenberry’s contract begins in 2020 which will see him through the 2022 season.

“Even though I had only been with the team for a brief period of time, I can see how professional the club is from top to bottom,” said Rosenberry. “I am excited to be part of the future and I’m more than ready to see what this group can achieve.”

Rubio, from Santiago, Chile, signed with Colorado via trade with Sporting Kansas City on December 18, 2018. Last season Rubio averaged 0.92 goals per game which put him just behind Atlanta’s Josef Martínez and LA Galaxy’s Zlatan Ibrahimović. He bagged eight goals and six assists in 2018 in just 781 minutes. The Chilean international has four senior team caps, the most recent one coming this past September when he started in La Roja’s friendly against South Korea. Rubio’s contract begins in 2020 which will see the Chilean through the 2022 season.

“I’m very happy that the club trusts in what I can do.” said Rubio. “It is time for me to act on that trust and give 100% each day.”
