Colorado Begins Quest for Open Cup

COMMERCE CITY, COLO. – The Colorado Rapids begin their quest for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, April 13 with a play-in qualifying game against the Kansas City Wizards at Stanley H. Durwood Stadium and Recreational Field on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. MT.

The Colorado Rapids will be providing live updates during the game on the official club blog, the Rapids Undercurrent.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Beginning in 1914, it is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.

Colorado and Kansas City met on Saturday, April 10 in an MLS regular season contest, with the Wizards winning 1-0.

The winner of Tuesday’s Rapids versus Kansas City game will advance to face the New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union or New England Revolution in the next phase of U.S. Open Cup qualifying. Please see 2010 Qualifying Matchups below.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Rapids will play a qualifying game to be able to try and advance into the tournament. Colorado have won each of their previous three opening games in qualification: defeating Real Salt Lake 2-1 in 2007, the LA Galaxy 1-0 in 2008, and the Galaxy again in 2009 on penalty kicks (4-2) after a scoreless game.

The Rapids and Wizards have met three previous times in U.S. Open Cup competition. In 1996, Colorado defeated Kansas City 3-2 in the Quarterfinals; in 2003, the Rapids defeated KC 3-2 in the 4th round; and in 2008, Kansas City defeated Colorado in the second qualifying match on penalty kicks (5-3) after a 2-2 game.

The Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, Chivas USA, Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, and Houston Dynamo have already qualified for the Round of 16 by having the six best records in the 2009 MLS season. 

The winners of Game F and Game G will qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
