The Rapids' first opportunity of the day came in the first minute of the game when forward Jeff Cunningham received a ball at the top of the penalty area. The former Crew player dribbled past the first defender before unleashing a low shot that was controlled by goalkeeper Bill Gaudette.

A well-placed cross by Kyle Beckerman in the 11th minute created the second opportunity for the visiting team. Beckerman received a long ball from defender Ricky Lewis on the right side of the field. The Rapids midfielder controlled the ball and dribbled his way past his marker before sending an outswinging cross into the heart of the penalty area. His cross met Cunnigham who beat his defender but sent a header directly to Gaudett.

The Crew created their first scoring opportunity when a creative spark from midfielder Kyle Martino left him in a good position in front of Joe Cannon’s goal. Martino dummied a pass at the top of the penalty area turning and leaving his defender behind. His powerful shot went just wide striking Cannon's right goal post.

Another header inside the Crew’s area created a good opportunity for the Rapids in the 29th minute. Midfielder Eric Denton sent an outswinging cross off a free kick that found Wolde Harris inside the penalty area. The Jamaican-born striker sent a header just inches wide of Gaudette’s right post.

The Crew pushed forward in the second half creating two scoring opportunities within a two minute span both by striker Cornell Glenn. The Crew’s forward hit the post in the 50th minute with an accurate header and was denied by an acrobatic save from Cannon in the 52nd minute.

A penalty kick gave the Crew the lead when forward Cornell Glenn beat Cannon to his right post in the 66th minute. Midfielder Mario Rodriguez had appeared to fall inside of the box when defender Ritchie Kotschau tackled the ball however referee Baldomero Toledo whistled for the penalty kick.

Cannon again came up with big in the 71st minute when he denied Rodriguez from five yards out. The Crew’s midfielder received a long ball on the right side of the penalty area and found himself on a one-on-one situation against Cannon but the Rapids' goalkeeper came well off his line to deflect the shot.

Petke had the last opportunity for the Rapids in injury time but his header was cleared off the line by Rodriguez seconds before the referee whistled the end of the game.

The Rapids will next host Western Conference rivals the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday June 15th at 7:30 p.m. (MT) at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
