Rapids Weekly Team Update

COMMERCE CITY CO (5/6/08) – The Colorado Rapids will train three times at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and once in Houston at Robertson Stadium this week in preparation for their first road match against a Western Conference opponent this season.
The players had Monday off and returned to the pitch this morning under beautiful weather for the second week in a row.

Tuesday’s session began with the players being put through their paces by Jamie Heiner of Impact Sports in fitness drills. The remainder of training was spent with the players divided into two groups. One group worked with assistant coaches John Murphy and Gary Smith on both defending and attacking the goal in both one-on-one and two-on-two situations. The other players were working on possession with head coach Fernando Clavijo before the two groups switched.

After dispatching DC United 2-0 last weekend the Rapids will take on the Houston Dynamo this weekend looking to stay on top of the Western Conference. Currently Colorado are tied with FC Dallas for the top spot as both teams have nine points on the young season although the Rapids have posted one more win.

Rapids fans will be happy to hear that Conor Casey has been taken off the disabled list and will be eligible to play in either the first team or reserve game this weekend. Last week the Denver South HS alum played about 15 minutes in the 4-2 scrimmage victory over the University of New Mexico.
Defender Mike Petke will remain on the disabled list until he is declared fit to play by the Rapids’ medical staff.
Recovering from a high ankle sprain John DiRaimondo was able to jog around the practice field for the first time this morning.
Goalkeeper Justin Hughes is also progressing with his groin injury as he worked out on the sideline at practice today.

Today's quote comes from defender Jordan Harvey on his professional debut and the team’s play vs. DC on Sunday:
"I was really excited to finally get my chance to prove myself on this team and I worked hard to get here. We have been playing well but haven’t really been getting results the last couple of games.
"The coach changed the line-up and it worked out. We wanted to focus on defense first and then play our game. Once we had that first goal our focus was to defend well and I think we defended well as a team. I think we all did great."
Rapids Youth Teams Update: Both the Rapids U16 and U18 teams will train Tuesday and Wednesday before taking on Real Colorado this Thursday in Highlands Ranch. Last week U18 forward Zach Paul continued his impressive play scoring three goals in a 6-0 rout of regional opponent FC Portland. Paul opened the scoring in the 12th minute on an assist from William Koki and put the game beyond doubt with two goals in the opening four minutes of the second half. Steven Emory added two goals and Alex Tarnoczi had one.
