Pareja has several midfield options with Hendry Thomas out "a few weeks"

Starting this Saturday against Toronto FC, the Colorado Rapids will look to a cast of veterans in central midfield due to the absence of Hendry Thomas. Thomas, who has started every match so far in 2013, was injured against the Houston Dynamo on Sunday.

“He has a strain in his left hamstring,” said head coach Oscar Pareja. “At this point, it seems like Hendry is going to be out a few weeks, and we’re going to be evaluating him every day to see how is his progress.”

While praising what the Honduran international has brought to the team, Pareja has also built a roster that allows the team to withstand losses to players throughout the starting XI.

“As much as we hate to lose players, and a player like Hendry who is that important in the team, everybody is working hard to make the best out of that opportunity,” Pareja continued. “Every player brings you different things. With Hendry, the way he takes the ball back from the other team, the many balls he recovers, that’s his game. The distribution as well. But it is what it is, and other players have to come and do that job.”

The second-year coach is very confident in any number of candidates to step in to the vacant midfield role.

“We have Pablo [Mastroeni], we have Nathan [Sturgis], we have [Dillon] Powers, we have Nick [LaBrocca],” Pareja concluded. “Martín [Rivero] is coming back, so we have some options there. It’s now up to them to take advantage of the opportunity.”

Thomas, for his part, took to twitter to address his injury - in Spanish and English:
