The Colorado Rapids return home to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this weekend following their 5-1 loss to New York City FC.
That loss ended the 15 match unbeaten streak, but the Rapids still have their unbeaten home record intact. Eight wins and three ties has given them 27 points so far, and the only team with more points at home this season is FC Dallas with 30.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC currently sit in sixth place in the Western Conference standings with 30 points and a -4 goal differential. They have played two more matches than the Rapids, and have conceded almost twice as many goals (37).
Their most recent match was a 1-0 CONCACAF Champions League victory over Central FC of Trinidad & Tobago, but the Starting XI for that match was entirely different from the one that lost to FC Dallas 2-0 last weekend.
These teams met three times last year with the home side coming out victorious on every occasion. Two matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park ended 1-0 and 2-1 for the Rapids, with the lone matchup at BC Place going to Vancouver 2-0.
The Rapids have won the last five matches against Vancouver at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park dating back to 2012.
Memories of Axel Sjöberg's stoppage time winner will still be fresh, and the Whitecaps will be looking to get some revenge for what they must feel was two points lost.
Player to Watch
There are threatening players all over the field for Vancouver, but a few stand out on either side of the ball.
Kendall Waston became the first player to score against Tim Howard in the 2016 MLS season when he nodded home the opener in the 10th minute. The Costan Rican defender is an imposing figure on the field and provides a dangerous option on set pieces.
Pedro Morales is the team’s leading goal-scorer with six goals while also providing four assists. The 31 year old Chilean has also recorded the third most shots on the team (34) and third most chances created (20).
