Match Report: Mushagalusa on target but U18s slip to defeat in third-place contest

There was further late heartache for the Colorado Rapids’ U18s, as they ended their stunning season on Sunday with a 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC in the third-place match at the Academy Championships in Carson, California.

Forty-eight hours on from losing the semifinal contest on penalties to eventual champions Texans SC Houston, the Rapids were undone by an 84th minute Sounders strike to finish fourth overall in the nation.

Enoch Mushagalusa had earlier given the Rapids the lead after 26 minutes, having received a pass from Samuel Vines and held off his marker. That advantage was cancelled out 11 minutes later when the Rapids failed to clear a freekick, and Milo Barton leveled. The teams remained locked at 1-1 until Sounders skipper Paul Rothrock snatched a second for Seattle with six minutes remaining.

Head coach, Chris Martinez, made four changes to the side which had lost in such an agonizing manner on Friday night. Bailey Heller, who had served a two-game suspension, returned in place of Desmond Cole. Liam Johnson was switched out for Damen Marcu, Sean Roberts got the nod in goal in place of Kainoa Likewise, while Moises Martinez stepped in for his twin brother Aaron.
