Headline of the Day | France rides Umtiti goal, stout defense to World Cup Final
France's attack is filled with starpower thanks to the phenom Kylian Mbappé, the cool finishing of Antoine Griezmann and the style of Paul Pogba. Against Belgium in the World Cup semifinals, however, it would be a defender that would ultimately seal a narrow 1-0 win sending Les Bleus to their first World Cup final since 2006.
The only goal of the night came in the 51st minute, when Samuel Umtiti met Griezmann's corner at the near post. The 24-year-old raised up to send a header sailing past Belgium's goalkeeper Thilbaut Courtois. It gave France an advantage that it would never relinquish.
Openings for Belgium were scarce as they sought a way back into the match. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard were unable to get the Red Devils' offense up to speed or find a way through the French defense.
France has now become the sixth country to reach the World Cup Final three times or more, after Germany (eight), Brazil (six), Italy (six), Argentina (five) and Netherlands (three). They are now one game away from lifting their second World Cup trophy and will face the winner of the semifinal game between Croatia and England.
"I'm very proud of them, I'm very proud of their mentality as well because I know it's not just that you are playing at a high level that you are going to score goals but with our state of mind we can climb mountains and that's what we've done so far," France's head coach Didier Deschamps said postgame.
