Colorado Rapids vs Boca Juniors | Recap | July 24, 2018

Colorado Rapids Soccer Club rallied back from two goals down and defeated Boca Juniors 5-4 on penalties to win the Western Union Cup Tuesday night at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park.

Nearing the end of their preseason, the Argentinian power took advantage of an early mistake by the Rapids as Wilmar Barrios slammed home a shot from the middle of the box after the home side turned the ball over deep in their own half. Just a few minutes later, Sebastian Villa doubled the lead through a beautiful buildup. In the end, Cristian Pavon’s low ball across goal found Sebastian Villa on the far post for the easy finish.

The Rapids, however, would settle in to the match that was much more physical and animated than a ‘friendly’ might suggest. The home side cut in to the lead in the 30th minute when Marlon Hairston’s looping cross from the right wing found Yannick Boli who calmly beat Boca goalkeeper Agustin Rossi.

The equalizer came in the second half as Enzo Martinez picked up the ball in midfield and hit a strike from distance. The ball bounced off the post and in for the Uruguayan.

The Western Union Cup was ultimately decided in a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of regulation play ended with the score 2-2. All five Rapids – Jack McBean, Dillon Serna, Enzo Martinez, Deklan Wynne and Zac MacMath – converted their kicks to give the home team the win.

The Rapids saw debuts from the newest addition, Kellyn Acosta, who donned the new number ten shirt and started in midfield. He was replaced at halftime by Nana Boateng. Homegrown defender Sam Vines also made his debut and played over 70 minutes of action. The 19-year-old held his own in a very spirited match.
