Germany Likely to Cancel Next Year's Pre-World Cup Tour of North America

FRANKFURT Germany (Associated Press) - Germany is likely to cancel next year's tour of the Americas that would have included games against the United States and Mexico an assistant coach said Monday.

"This American trip most likely won't happen said Joachim Loew assistant to national team coach Juergen Klinsmann.

The tour was originally planned for December 2005 but Klinsmann is reluctant to take his team on a distant trip during a time they would normally get off for the Bundesliga winter break especially after a season already prolonged by the Confederations Cup.

The trip would have come six months before the World Cup meaning players would get little time off in the 12 months before the competition.

German soccer federation (DFB) spokesman Harald Stenger denied a Kicker magazine report that the federation would face demands for compensation in millions for pulling out of the games.

"There have been talks with potential opponents but no contracts were signed Stenger said.

Germany is slated to travel on an Asian tour next month for games in Japan South Korea and Thailand. The tour is not popular with players.
