Rapids Explode for 4-0 Win over New York

COMMERCE CITY CO (Saturday July 25 2009; from MLS Reports) - The Colorado Rapids continued their rcent goalscoring rampage against the New York Red Bulls rolling to a 4-0 victory Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Jacob Peterson Pat Noonan Nick LaBrocca and Mehdi Ballouchy all scored for the Rapids who have now scored 16 goals in their last four games against New York over the last two seasons all Colorado victories. The Rapids have scored three or more goals in all four matches with New York and four or more goals in three of those matches.

Omar Cummings wasted no time getting his groove going in the game. In just the fifth minute Cummings collected a long ball from Ugo Ihemelu on the wide right wing took a couple of touches outside of the area then fired a pass along the top of the goal area where Peterson Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul and a Red Bulls defender all converged on the ball. Peterson won the race and buried the ball in the upper left corner of the net to give Colorado an early lead.

The assist was Cummings' seventh on the season giving him a share of the league lead and it was Peterson's second goal of the season strengthening his case for continually increasing playing time in his sixth start of the season.

Despite the early advantage the Rapids showed vulnerability in their half of the field giving New York ample opportunity to threaten 'keeper Matt Pickens in the first half. Midfielder Macoumba Kandji had a good 18th-minute effort besting LaBrocca and Ihemelu before getting clear for a shot from 24 yards that Pickens was able to deflect as it headed for the upper corner.

The Rapids threatened in the 27th minute as Ihemelu delivered a ball from the right corner to Noonan who had an opportunity on goal. But from 10 yards out Noonan didn't get a good first touch on it shooting wide.

Cummings had an excellent opportunity in the 32nd minute taking a long bouncing pass alone in front of the net. He was unable to get control of it before Coundoul came out of the box and challenged him stopping the drive while another defender cleared the loose ball rolling toward the net.

The Rapids had a setback in the 38th minute when new defender Julien Baudet and New York midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic collided in midair with Baudet coming down hard on his wrist. Baudet was helped off the field with a cast on his left wrist and preliminary reports from the field were that the central defender broke his wrist on the fall.
Adding insult to his injury Baudet was shown a caution for the reckless play with the announcement coming as he was taken to an ambulance to head out to the hospital.
The Red Bulls took a free kick following the foul with Alfredo Pacheco's kick penetrating the wall of Rapids players and forcing Pickens to bat the bouncing ball away.

The Rapids' best chance to break the game open came in the 41st minute when Ihemelu gave a great service that Coundoul stopped but lost control of. Ballouchy took the rebound and shot on the empty net but former Rapids defender Mike Petke was there to head it out and maintain the one-goal margin.
Ubiparipovic was shown a straight red card in first-half stoppage time for serious foul play undercutting Palguta as he made a leap for the ball.

Taking a man advantage into the interval the Rapids were even quicker to lengthen their lead in the second half with Noonan receiving a ball 30 yards out turning and taking it to the top of the area where Coundoul challenged him and Noonan fired past him to double the lead.
Cummings continued to create chances making a break in the 57th minute and feeding wide to Ballouchy rather than taking a shot himself. Two minutes later Cummings played wide as Noonan sent him a pass from the center. Cummings beat his defender rounding him for a hard shot on goal. He collected the rebound and set up another chance but New York held firm on defense.
The Rapids kept the pressure on however as Ballouchy fired a shot in the 61st minute from the top of the area which Coundoul deflected enabling LaBrocca to dart in to tap it past the grounded goalkeeper for his second score of the season and a safe 3-0 lead.
The Rapids refused to sit on their laurels however and Ballouchy sunk Colorado's fourth goal on a direct free kick in the 67th minute blasting a ball over the Red Bulls wall from the left and hitting the top right corner of the net as an outstretched Coundoul leapt toward the corner.
The Rapids also got their first look at new Argentine striker Facundo Diz who came for Noonan in the 78th minute a day after signing with the club.

The Rapids next prepare for their second match of a 3-game home stand as they face the defending MLS champions Columbus Crew next week in Commerce City while the Red Bulls have a week off from league play to try and recover though they face their opening match in the CONCACAF Champions League at midweek playing against W Connection in Trinidad on Thursday.
