Casey has now scored four goals against the Red Bulls in his last two matches against New York at Giants Stadium.
New York’s Juan Pablo Angel got the first and last shot of the first half but it was the second of his two that pulled the Red Bulls even at 1-1 at the break.
Angel got the action started quickly when within the first minute of play he found himself alone for an early opportunity after the ball bounced through the Rapids’ defense to the far post. Despite the hard right footed shot Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens recorded his first save of the match with a dive to his right.
Action continued to be back-and-forth until the Rapids broke through with the contest’s first score.
Colin Clark worked the ball along the left side of the pitch with some creativity before passing off to Mehdi Ballouchy near the corner. Ballouchy then sent his third assist of the season across the box finding Casey who ran in behind the New York backline and would finish with a header over the out-stretched arms of Jon Conway.
Colorado looked to be taking a 1-0 advantage into the break only to find their lead slip in final minutes on a penalty kick goal.
New York’s Dane Richards drew the call after being taken down by Cory Gibbs right near the penalty spot. Richards was able to earn the play for the home side when while holding Gibbs off as he made his way towards goal he spun to his right causing the Colorado defender to bring him down with a tackle.
Angel completed the play with the penalty kick score for his fourth of the season.
The Rapids wasted no time regaining their lead as Casey scored his second of the match in the 48th minute. In similar fashion to his first score Casey was able to finish with his head pass Conway. This time the assist came in from Jordan Harvey per Omar Cummings.
Colorado increased their lead to 3-1 in the 60th minute converting a penalty kick of their own off the foot of Mehdi Ballouchy who tallied his first goal of the season to the left side of the net.
Omar Cummings drew the call as he was bought down by Albert Celades just inside the corner of the box.
The Red Bulls cut the deficit in the 73rd minute when Danleigh Borman scored his first of season. New York was given a freekick roughly 25-yards from goal which was taken by the Red Bulls’ captain. Angel fired a shot on-goal that was deflected down and spun away from Pickens. Borman was able to sneak in and just get enough foot on the ball to knock it past the Rapids ‘keeper.
Colorado’s defense held strong through four minutes of added time to seal the win.
The Rapids stay out on the road next week when they travel to face their Rocky Mountain Cup rival Real Salt Lake on Saturday June 6 at 8 pm MT.
