The Rapids came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute of the game when Nicolas Hernandez was brought down five yards outside Chivas’ penalty area setting up a dangerous freekick. Spanish defender Aitor Karanka’s powerful shot went through the defensive wall but was blocked by a sea of Chivas players’ legs. The rebound landed at the feet of Thiago Martins three yards away from goal but the Brazilian was caught in an offside position.

Clint Mathis came close to scoring for the Rapids in the 33rd minute when he sprinted to collect a loose ball inside of the home team’s penalty area. Mathis beat both the defender and the goalkeeper in the race but was only able to tip the ball which went wide to the left of the goal.

A minute later Mendoza netted the lone goal of the night after dribbling past two Rapids defenders. Mendoza beat Joe Cannon to his left post from seven yards out.

Hernandez had another good scoring opportunity in the 58th minute when he stole the ball from defender Claudio Suarez and broke free on a one-on-one situation against Chivas 'keeper Brad Guzan. Hernandez’ close-range shot was blocked by Guzan’s right foot.

In the dying moments of the match substitute striker Jovan Kirovski came close to scoring the equalizer. Kirovski met a cross from Karanka just inside the penalty area but his header was controlled by Guzan.

The Rapids will next travel to the East Coast next weekend to take on the New England Revolution on Saturday September 30 at 5:00 pm (MT) at Gillette Stadium.
