Colorado Rapids made two selections during the 2016 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday afternoon. With the 15th and 37th overall picks, the Rapids selected Emmanuel Appiah and Dennis Castillo, respectively.
"We think Emmanuel is a very skilled player both going forward and in a defensive role while Castillo can play on both sides of the field at the back. He has captained Saprissa at youth level, he's played for Costa Rica at the U18s and the U20s,” said Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director. “We're excited about both of them and we're looking forward to seeing what they can do on the field when we get them into camp.”
The Rapids originally held the second overall pick in the SuperDraft but during a draft-day trade, exchanged it for general allocation money and a player to be named later from Philadelphia Union.
Additionally, Colorado acquired the #1 allocation ranking from the Chicago Fire as well as the 15th and 33rd picks in exchange for the #2 allocation ranking and the 12th and 22nd overall picks.
Before the afternoon was over, the Rapids made one final trade, this time with FC Dallas. The Rapids traded their 33rd pick in exchange for the 37th and 57th picks.
Appiah will arrive in Commerce City after spending the past five years at the University of Cincinnati. The 5ft 9ins midfielder earned Second Team All-American Athletic Conference and Second Team All-Ohio accolades after finishing second on the team in points (16), goals (five) and assists (six) in 2015. As a Bearcat, Appiah appeared in 65 matches (46 starts), netting seven goals and adding 11 assists.
The Rapids then selected Castillo, a defender from Virginia Commonwealth University, with the #37 overall pick. The 2015 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year was a four-year starter for the Rams, starting all 80 games he saw action in, a school record. The San Jose, Costa Rica, native scored 17 goals and notched two assists which also earned him NSCAA Second Team All-Midwest Region, Atlantic 10 Championship Player and Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference. Castillo has also represented the Costa Rica national team at the U18 and U20 levels.
Colorado still holds the 43rd, 57th and 63rd picks in rounds three and four of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft which will take place via a conference call on Tuesday, January 19 at 12 p.m. MT.
