Match Report: Whitecaps FC hand Rapids second home loss of the season

An 83rd minute tally from substitute Brek Shea gave the Vancouver Whitecaps FC a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Alan Gordon got the nod at center forward for the second straight game, while Shkëlzen Gashi was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in over a month. Additionally, goalkeeper Tim Howard returned to action after serving his three-game suspension.

With less than 10 minutes to go, the Rapids were caught up the field and a quick counterattack by the visitors ended with a streaking Shea all alone with only the Rapids keeper to beat. The former USMNT international sent a low shot between Howard’s legs, giving Vancouver their first win in Colorado since 2012.

The Rapids were the better side throughout the match, outshooting the Whitecaps FC 15-9. Kevin Doyle had the best chance in the first 45 minutes. Mohammed Saeid was played through down the left flank and his outswinging cross found Doyle at the far post but the Irish international’s header sailed over the bar.

Ten minutes after the restart, Mastroeni’s men would come very close once more. Jordan Harvey’s attempted clearance bounced off the post and just as the ball looked to go into the back of the net, Vancouver’s goalkeeper David Ousted made a spectacular diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Moments after Shea’s eventual game-winner, the Rapids would go down to 10 men after Mekeil Williams saw a second yellow for a tough challenge on Nicolás Mezquida.

Next up for the Rapids (1-6-1; 4 points) is another home contest next Saturday afternoon against San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. MT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
