COMMERCE CITY CO ( - Are you ready for the excitement to begin? Your Colorado Rapids kick off the first home game of their 14th MLS season this Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park as they host the Kansas City Wizards at 7:30pm!
Despite Thursday's blizzard stadium snow removal crews have cleared the stands and kickoff for Saturday night is forcasted to be sunny and a balmy 50 degrees! (Read the Rapids Undercurrent's recap on clearing the stadium by clicking here).
Your Rapids will look to rebound from a season-opening loss last week at Chivas when they return to the friendly confines of Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday; Colorado are 2-0-0 in their last 2 consecutive opening nights at their home stadium.
The Rapids hold a 16-19-8 all-time record against the Kansas City Wizards in 13 years of competition. In Colorado the Rapids are 13-4-5 all-time vs. KC and are unbeaten in their last five match-ups against the Wizards going 4-0-1 in those contests.
The Rapids are also prepared to make franchise history on Saturday as the club look to win their third straight home opener. Colorado are a perfect 2-0 in home openers since moving into Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and have outscored their opponents 6-to-1 in those matches.
The Rapids will find themselves without the services of Team Captain Pablo Mastroeni for this weekend's game as he was called-up by the U.S. Men's National Team last week. Pablo left to join the USMNT following Colorado’s game against Chivas USA last Saturday and should re-join the Rapids before their April 4 match against Los Angeles. The U.S. first travel to face El Salvador at Estadio Cuscatlán in the second match of the 10-game final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Kickoff on March 28 is set for 7pm MT. Four days later the state of Tennessee will host its first World Cup Qualifier when the U.S. welcome Trinidad & Tobago to LP Field in Nashville with kickoff at 7:30p.m. MT on April 1.
The Kansas City Wizards are in search of their first points of the season as well after falling to Toronto FC 2-3 last week. Midfielder Davy Arnaud sits among the league leaders in goals after notching both of KC's scores last week. The Wizards return forward Josh Wolff who in 22 career matches against the Rapids has tallied nine goals and five assists. Kansas City M/F Herculez Gomez also makes his first appearance at Dick's Sporting Goods Park since being traded to the Wizards back on September 3 2008. Gomez forever etched his name in Rapids history by scoring the first-ever goal in the new stadium back on April 7 2007.
