2018 Season Opener sees Jackson score Colorado Rapids' 900th regular season goal

It just so happened that a 22-year old scored a goal 23 years in the making.

In the 66th minute of the 2018 Season Opener against New England Revolution Saturday night at Gillette Stadium, rookie forward Niki Jackson’s name went into the Rapids’ history books. It wasn't because he scored just one minute in to his MLS debut, or that his first touch of the ball resulted in his first career goal. His name will be remembered first and foremost on this occasion because the goal was the 900th all-time in MLS play for the Colorado Rapids. So it goes, the 2018 fourth-round SuperDraft pick will personally remember the events of March 10 forever. At the same time fans of the burgundy and blue will recall Jackson's goal when the club hits 1000, and hopefully for many years to come.

In sports, we love to remember the past. Past goals, milestones and achievements. These are the moments that mark the passing of time and make fans proud of the club they support.

So let's take a look back at all nine century milestone goals in Colorado Rapids history, as well as the one that started it all:

Goal #1 | April 21, 1996 | Marcelo Balboa

Marcelo Balboa had a monumental debut with Colorado, scoring twice in the Rapids 3-1 home opening victory against Dallas Burn including the team's first-ever goal at Mile High Stadium. The two-goal performance earned Balboa MLS Player of the Week honors, making him the sole Rapid to earn the distinction in 1996.

Goal #100 | April 11, 1998 | Wolde Harris

Wolde Harris scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute of a 3-3 tie with D.C. United at RFK Stadium on goalkeeper Scott Garlick.

It was Harris’ first goal of the year and the Rapids sixth goal of 1998 season, which came in the 68th regular season game in team history.

Harris’ goal tied the game at 3-3 with seven minutes to play, though D.C. ended up winning the shootout. Wolde had his shootout attempt saved which clinched the extra point for D.C.

He had entered for Chris Martinez in the 81st minute.

Goal #200 | April 22, 2000 | Jorge Dely Valdes

Jorge Dely Valdes scored the Rapids first goal of a 3-2 win over Columbus Crew SC at Crew Stadium, tying the game 1-1 with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute on goalkeeper Mark Dougherty.

It was Dely Valdes’ third goal of the season and the Rapids’ sixth goal of the 2000 season in the 134th regular season game in team history.

Goal #300 | July 24, 2002 | Chris Henderson

Chris Henderson took a pass from John Spencer (and Robin Frazer) and scored to give Colorado the 1-0 lead in the 34th minute against New England Revolution on goalkeeper Juergen Sommer. The Rapids went on to win the game 3-2 at Gillette Stadium.

It was Henderson’s ninth goal of the year and the team’s 27th goal of the 2002 season. It was the 206th regular season game in team history.

Goal #400 | June 18, 2005 | Jeff Cunningham

Jeff Cunningham scored his third of the night in the 78th minute on a pass from Dan Gargan, on goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the Rapids' 3-1 win over Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center.

It was Cunningham’s eighth goal of the season and the team’s 15th goal of the 2005 season. It was the 288th regular season game in team history.

Goal #500 | May 4, 2008 | Facundo Erpen

Facundo Erpen scored his only goal of the season in the 72nd minute (from Terry Cooke and Christian Gomez) in a 2-0 win over D.C. United and goalkeeper Zach Wells at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park.

Erpen’s goal was the second of the game, and 10th Rapids goal of the 2008 season. It was the 374th regular season game in team history.

Goal #600 | August 28, 2010 | Omar Cummings

Omar Cummings scored the second goal of the game in the 16th minute (from Conor Casey and Pablo Mastroeni) as the Rapids defeated Houston 3-0 at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park. In goal for Houston was Pat Onstad.

It was Cummings’ sixth goal of the year and the Rapids’ 24th goal of 2010 season, coming in the club’s 469th regular season game.

Goal #700 | September 5, 2012 | Jaime Castrillon

Kamani Hill's 86th minute corner kick was headed back across the goal mouth by Drew Moor, where Jaime Castrillon leapt to head in the final goal of the 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers at DICK'S Sporting Goods Park. In goal for Portland was Donovan Ricketts.

It was Castrillon's team-leading seventh goal of the season and Colorado's 36th of the year in the 28th game of 2012. This was the club's 520th regular season game, and 200th regular season victory.

Goal #800 | April 10, 2015 | Dillon Serna

Dillon Serna rifled home the Rapids’ fourth in a 4-0 rout of FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. The Homegrown player had entered the match as an 81st minute substitute, and smashed a left-footed drive beyond FC Dallas keeper Chris Seitz just four minutes later. It completed a comfortable first victory of the season for the Rapids, and would go on to be voted MLS Goal of the Week.

Goal #900 | March 10, 2018 | Niki Jackson

Niki Jackson scored the Rapids' 900th goal just one minute into his MLS debut. The 22-year-old subbed into the game in the 65th minute, replacing teammate Jack McBean before quickly leveling for the Rapids in the 66th minute of the 2018 Season Opener against New England Revolution. The rookie forward beat the Revolution's goalkeeper Matt Turner to a perfectly floated cross from Johan Bomberg and headed in his first-ever MLS goal.
