Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today that it has acquired wingback Deklan Wynne from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for $100,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM).
The speedy left-footed defender becomes the second New Zealand international to join the Rapids this offseason after Kip Colvey was selected by the club in the 2017 MLS Waiver Draft on Wednesday, December 13.
"Top-level left-sided players can be tough to find, but in Deklan we believe we've found someone who has both the technical gifts and the aggression to be a long-term solution for us," Sporting Director & Interim General Manager Pádraig Smith said. "We're excited to welcome him to the club."
Wynne, 22, arrives in Commerce City after spending the past three seasons in USL. He had arguably his most successful campaign in 2017, tallying two goals in 20 games (all starts) and 1,784 minutes logged. In all, Wynne appeared in 35 regular season matches (29 starts) for the Whitecaps FC 2.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa but raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Wynne began his professional career in the ASB Premiership, New Zealand’s national association football league. He went the distance in all 26 games he appeared in for Wanderers SC from 2013-15.
Internationally, the 5-foot-10-inch defender has represented the New Zealand national team 15 times, tallying a pair of goals along the way. At the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, Wynne started the All Whites’ first two group matches against Russia and Mexico, and like Colvey, he also played the full 90 minutes in both games against Peru in the Intercontinental Playoff series in November.
